Celebrating the Web?

Comments

Susan Crawford arguing that the web is so essential that we need a reminder to how important it is.

Like water or air, we take the continued functioning of the web for granted.  It started off as a (very serious) hobby for academics, and now it’s like breathing — it’s essential.  Maybe we could celebrate it by all taking a day off — simultaneously — from using it.

What I’m failing to understand is why only the web? Can you imagine your life without electricity? Or phone service, Or internal combustion engine?

Yes the internet, and the web as part of it, represents great hope of freedom and social changes. But so was the electricity, the phone and the telegraph.

One Web Day is actually an act of fear, a fear from the actions of the network providers; A fear that someone will enforce barrier on our access to the internet. Unlike Susan I’m not so afraid from the threats that companies like AT&T and Verizon pose. And although recent event paint them as more threatening than before I truly believe that if they will try to play the old monopoly play they will have unpleasant surprise. If now they are facing competition from the cable companies in the near future we will see other players using different technologies joining the game. In the other hand the cry for even more government involvement in the market is much more dangerous to the freedom of the web.

Fear is never a good reason for a party
