Now it is perfect
I wasn’t McCain’s supporter as it is, but this makes his candidacy a complete disaster:
Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain’s short list for a running mate. At least that’s the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain’s inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee’s campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm.
Nice spin
I love watching the political game, and how the political spin is working. Ron Paul’s remarks from today is a great example: a less known candidate which got some media attention for a very successful fundraising keep the with a controversial remarks aiming at the frontrunner. This is, when working, ensuring more media time and opportunity to increase the candidate’s “name recognition”. Increasing the horror effect on the faux news host is very simple - using a literary reference will be out of their league…:)
And the remark, by the way, was completely in place!
Elephant in a china store
I am far from being fond of Mike Huckabee. His ideology and political agenda are completely the opposite of mine and He represent all the gone wrong with the GOP. While I believe in individual rights and liberty, Governor Huckabee promote the worse of all worlds - Big Government Conservatism - a brand of social conservative who believe in harnessing the power of government to impose their social ideals on other people. I hoped, however, that his foreign policy is more realistic, mostly because of his short statements criticizing the Bush administration for its arrogance.
Reading Huckabee’ foreign policy agenda I know that these hopes were false.
If it wasn’t tragic it might had been funny to read such a simplistic, ignorant and self contradicting document from a front tier candidate for the office of President of one of the strongest countries in the wold. The fact that it isn’t the first time in american recent history that its elected President was completely ignorant about the world, isn’t comforting at all - the damages created by such ignorant Presidents - Wilson, Truman, Kennedy, Carter and Obviously George W. Bush (and this is by any count a partial list) should be an alarming warning from even considering adding yet another one. The huckabee doctrine will attempt to lead the US into an attempt to illusion of building self sufficient energy market, ignoring the russian interests in the middle east (and the fact that it has more to loose because of american idiotic policies) and bombing current allies, ignoring the blowback of such policies.
I can only wonder which will cause more devastating damages - Huckabee’ foreign policies or his domestic agenda?
Honesty
One of the strongest points in Taliban Mike’s campaign, along with being a fundamentalist and paternalist, was his integrity. But while you can explain opinion changes in changes that are relevant it is harder to accept this explanation as valid reason for flip-flopping:
"What changed was I’m running for president."
– Mike Huckabee, on why he changed his position on Cuba, "Hannity & Colmes," FNC, 12/10.
So it seems that we can take integrity out of the list as well. Yup, he is a perfect GOP candidate…
Taliban Mike
I guess we will see more and more of this sort:
Here’s part of the text of a Southern Baptist Convention full-page ad in USA Today in 1998 that Mike Huckabee signed:
"A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ."
This should not be surprising, and it demonstrates, yet again, how little is the difference between Huckabee, and his sort, and the Middle East fundamentalists he so eagerly want to defend us from. my wife had put it in a slightly different context:
“Of course this is just the sort of thirst for a fantasy existence that makes adult men hide in their basements pretending to be Luke Skywalker, or Frodo or whatever.”
As always, focusing on the least important issues.
I was hoping that the Huckabee smearing will focus on issues of substance. I was hoping that his foreign policy will be examine and that things like this will be picked by the MSM:
Kuhn: I don’t know to what extent you have been briefed or been able to take a look at the NIE report that came out yesterday …
Huckabee: I’m sorry?Kuhn: The NIE report, the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran. Have you been briefed or been able to take a look at it —
Huckabee: No.
Kuhn: Have you heard of the finding?
Huckabee: No. [bold mine DL; ed.-doesn’t he read the newspaper?]
Kuhn then summarized the NIE finding that Iran had stopped work on a clandestine nuclear program four years ago and asked if it “adjusts your view on Iran in any sense.”
Kuhn: What is your concern on Iran as of now?
Huckabee: I’ve a serious concern if they were to be able to weaponize nuclear material, and I think we all should, mainly because the statements of Ahmadinejad are certainly not conducive to a peaceful purpose for his having it and the fear that he would in fact weaponize it and use it. (He pauses and thinks) I don’t know where the intelligence is coming from that says they have suspended the program or how credible that is versus the view that they actually are expanding it. … And I’ve heard, the last two weeks, supposed reports that they are accelerating it and it could be having a reactor in a much shorter period of time than originally been thought. [bold mine-DL; ed.-this ought to discredit him utterly, and maybe it will.]
Or maybe his fiscal policies, or his religious fundamentalism and how will it effect his presidency.
But the focus of the main stream media, as always been, is on the least important story of all. It is safe, generates headline and nobody actually need to think.
It is getting hot
Now that the Huckster’s surge is basically a fact it is only a question of time when the threatened campaigns will move on the attack. We can already see some, small, evidences of the coming offense, but it will be interesting to see which candidate will be the first to openly attack the new darling of the GOP primaries. If I need to bet I will risk and say that it will be probably Romney on the social issues and Giuliani on the fiscal policies. I hope to see a decent criticism, unlike the petty stupidity we saw on the last CNN/YouTube debate, and the fact is that with Huckabee there is enough room for a lot of it.
It will be also interesting to see how will such attacks will effect Ron Paul’s numbers…
The worst case scenario
Mike Huckabee represent the worst that the GOP can offer - a big intrusive government that intend to impose its moral standards on everyone. In a disguise of free market advocate, Republicans - the Huckabee type - intend to continue the big spending orgy, the corporations handouts and the constant look for additional "revenue" sources. The man is a nightmare for anyone that cherish freedom.
