Your nanny knows better
New level of intervention in what should be personal decision was reached today by the city of NY:
NEW YORK — The Board of Health voted Tuesday to make New York the first city in the nation to ban artery-clogging artificial trans fats at restaurants — from the corner pizzeria to high-end bakeries.
The board, which passed the ban by a unanimous vote, did give restaurants a slight break by relaxing what had been considered a tight deadline for compliance. Restaurants will be barred from using most frying oils containing artificial trans fats by July, and will have to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of its foods by July 2008.
I understood, although didn’t agree, the argument for banning smoking in bars and restaurants as a protection for non-smokers. However today’s decision isn’t intend to protect others. It is obvious that the city is concern with the increase of health cost and therefore acting to reduce it by making health decision for individuals. It is such a circular logic that it is hard in first to decipher: first we collect tax in order to improve that health services given and then we run your life so the cost of health care wouldn’t increase. Wouldn’t it make sense to admit that public health care isn’t as efficient than to keep interfering with one’s life?
And I didn’t even mentioned that this decision forcing the use of more expensive oils - which will cause an increase in prices. Shouldn’t one make his own decision if to pay more for healthier food or not?
