Educating Asad
Unlike his father, Asad the Syrian president isn’t a talented politician. Once and again he fails to read the international situation correctly, and Once and again he putting himself in bad situation. Today he showed again how incompetent leader he is while instead of rebuilding Syrian influence in Lebanon and breaking the international isolation he choose to declare that:
Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad told the Egyptian opposition weekly Al-Usbu’ in an interview that the Golan Heights would be liberated by Syrian hands, and warned that Israel will pay a heavy price if it enters into war with Syria
Asad did not understand the lesson from his mistakes in the handling the Lebanese crisis just few years ago. Instead of realizing that he can regain influence in Lebanon and brake the international isolation only by an image of responsible leader he called for war.
However, and to his great fortune , the world need Asad where he is. If we learned something from the war in Iraq is that removing a dictator in the Middle East isn’t the recipe for freedom. Syria’s demographic balance isn’t less complicated than Iraq and toppling Asad isn’t going to create a better Middle East.
The proper approach is to handle Asad as the problematic child that he is and to manage him according to his "behavior". Such example is the German Foreign Minister reaction to Asad’s speech:
Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s foreign minister, on Tuesday abruptly cancelled a planned visit to Syria after President Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian leader, delivered a hard-hitting speech that ridiculed Israel’s military offensive in Lebanon and warned against disarming Hizbollah.
Mr Steinmeier, who had already boarded his aircraft in Jordan, en route for Syria, when he cancelled his trip, criticised the speech as “going in completely the wrong direction” on the need for regional peace and containing no constructive references to the United Nations ceasefire resolution.
The only hope is that Asad’s advisors will learn the lesson, I don’t think he is capable to do it by himself.
