Another day, another assassination
In Lebanon the political game remains very dangerous. Like his uncle in 1982, Pierre Gemayel was murdered today - most likely because of his anti-Syrian activity. I’m being extra careful here because Lebanese demonstrated more than once that it brought the art of deception, double crossing and betrayal to the level of art.
The question who, and why, shot Pierre Gemayel is less relevant to the fact that it is often an acceptable method to achieve political gain.
It is possible that the assassination was Syria’s doing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t. The interests web of politic, drugs and private armies is to complicated to the un-trained observer, and most times to the more trained - as the Israeli intelligence agencies learned during the fiasco of 1982.
As sad as murder can be, I wouldn’t rush to mourn the Lebanese democracy. It wasn’t as it seems before and it has to survive more dangerous enemies than this.

AFAK, his family was told to be in risk anyways. However, this is a terrible step for israel as well, as we are on the verge of civil war there, which might put us at risk.
Lebanon is on the verge of civil war constantly, and while the effect on Israel isn’t positive I’m not sure that it is so negative. If Hezbullah will be busy fighting inside Lebanon, it will not have resources to fight on the northern border.
I tend not to be so worked up about event in Lebanon, since life is to short to decipher what is actually happening their, who is loyal to whom and when - and anyway I’ll get it wrong.
And on serious note: It is too important to France and the US to keep Lebanon stable and I’m sure that they will invest resources (France will use its long, and effective, influence and diplomacy and the US will use the threat of military). It would be better for all sides if Israel wouldn’t make it its business to “Help”…
