Adhere to the constituation? What the polls say?
It seems that some Conservatives start to comeback to their senses, they aren’t perfect (hence they aren’t Libertarians, although I saw Bob Barr name as a cofounder) but they are in the right track. I first learn about them while I was reading this article in the Boston Globe:
WASHINGTON — A new political group recently asked Mitt Romney to promise not to wiretap Americans without a judge’s approval or to imprison US citizens without a trial as "enemy combatants." When Romney declined to sign their pledge, the group denounced him as "unfit to serve as president."
Such rhetoric might be expected from liberal activists. But these critics, who call their organization American Freedom Agenda, are hardly leftists. They represent what they insist is a growing group of disaffected conservatives who are demanding that the Republican Party return to its traditional mistrust of concentrated government power.
This is, if it will attract many conservatives who are disappointed from Bush’s compassionate conservatism or from the neo conservatism, is a blessed development.
As for Romney, I would not take the fact that he didn’t sign the pledge so badly, it is just that he didn’t take enough surveys to know if he in favor of preserving the constitution or not. But give him enough time, and as soon as the poll data is analyzed, Romney will , most likely, decide what his opinion is - for at least the near future…
I probably don’t need to mention that Ron Paul didn’t need to wait for poll data before he sign the pledge, do I?

As for the constitution - as the new President of Israel use to say "Yes, and No". The Soviet Union had a beautifully written constitution that was worthless, and so will the Iraqi constitution. On the other hand England managed to develop a democracy (which in my mind is better than the American version) without a constitution. However in the American case the constitution is very important - not always in real-time since it didn't prevent many injustices (Slavery will be the most famous one). But in the most part it is guide which help the system to correct itself (as it is happen now with the evil of "enemy combatant" . Moreover, it seems to me that for the American system, with its lack of subtlety, the constitution is crucial document.
As for Israel, I think that an attempt to write a constitution now will be a disaster - So I guess we are in agreement on this issue.
