Mistake or strategy change?
Was this a sleep of the tongue? I am seriously doubt it
“Israel is a democracy and does not threaten anyone,” Olmert exclaimed. The only thing we have tried to do is to live without [threats of] terror, but we have never threatened anyone with annihilation. Iran explicitly, openly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map.”
“Can you say that this is the same level, when [Iran] is aspiring to have nuclear weapons, like America, France, Israel and Russia [JPost italics]?” he said, adding that these were “cultured nations” who did not threaten the world’s foundations with nuclear destruction.
The Prime Minister’s Office denied on Monday evening that Olmert’s statement was an official acknowledgement that Israel possessed nuclear weapons.
The policy of ambiguity regarding Israel’s nuclear capabilities was debated for long time, and was originally intended to serve the American interests. It seems that Both, The US and Israel decided to change this policy.
The main question still remains - Was this only an escalation of the crisis with Iran, a open deterrence with a grain of threat? I hope not. Nuclear Iran is already a fact, and not necessarily bad one. We need to change the strategy so we can harness this reality to create a stable Middle-East and braking the ambiguity should be only one, small, step.
