It is rare to read such harsh language written by Fred Wilson, but he is absolutely right. The question however is not: "How can someone so powerful be such an idiot?" rather than why should the political system is so powerful:

The problem is that politicians are not supposed to have power over us– we’re supposed to be free. We seem to have forgotten that freedom means the absence of government coercion. So when politicians and the media celebrate political power, they really are celebrating the power of certain individuals to use coercive state force.

I was wondering what will come after banning Trans-fat, crossing the street with an iPod and the ban on "eating, drinking, smoking, reading, writing, personal grooming, playing an instrument, "interacting with pets or cargo," talking on a cell phone or using any other personal communication device while driving. ". Care to guess what will come next?

I am not intimately close to the French or German societies, but from the little that I'm reading they have their fare share of banning and intruding. However American, since their early history, has a tendency of imposing social standards. So yes America isn't as free as I thought in the past, but it isn't as oppressive as it might appear reading my humble blog.</font>

    Just to stir things up, don't you find it amusing that of all the terrible meddling governments out their, the so called representative of capitalism, small government, and personal freedom is, in many respects one the most intrusive? Where else is smoking such an obscenity? What other country presents the wonderfully paradoxical duality of having the most overweight population and, at the same time, coming up with the most restrictive ideas for policy?
    In reference to your own writing some posts back, wouldn't it be fair to say that America really isn't what it seems? Not with regard to capitalism, and not with regards to freedom?
    How unpatriotic of me to say so. Lucky for me it's not those good old sixties or I'd be burned on the cross (on my own lawn too). Oh, I just recalled, as a foreign citizen, I am allowed to be un-American, right? I mean, as long as I don't smoke, am not fat, and am not Muslim. That would probably still make me a communist (which isn't much different than a socialist to most Americans), but I can live with that...
