Is it more efficient?
John decided to give a chance to hybrid car, not because of the environment but because he believed the promises that it will save him money. However when he calculated the actual numbers, he found that:
When it will take 8 or 9 years to make up the difference in the cost of getting a hybrid over a traditional engine, it really will not make much sense to most consumers. If you are like me, you don’t have that kind of extra money to put up front and can’t wait that long to recoup the cost.
I can already here those who would suggest tempering with the incentive by playing with the taxes, which isn’t really changing the reality - just shift the costs somewhere else (kind of hiding the dirt under the carpet).
It is reminding me an argument my wife had once with a friend of her about organic food. When my wife argued that the idea of feeding the entire world with organic food is problematic since the method of producing organic food are inefficient her friend answered: " It isn’t inefficient, it just more expensive"….

It also depends on what the 'other' car is in your scenario, i.e. the price of the other car and its fuel economy.

It is one mistake to claim the ecenomic is the silver bullet for every issue. It is another mistake to choose to ignore it...
