In disguise of fairness

Comments

MSNBC reports that the Democrats are pushing to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine:

Democrats have two media-access goals.

One is to prod local broadcast television and radio stations to renew their atrophied commitment to producing and airing their own public affairs programming – shows that Democrats think would at least give them a chance to be heard. Some Democrats want to require stations to give free time for campaign debates, and even free campaign advertising as part of the stations’ “public service” licensing requirement.

The Democrats’ more ambitious (and longer-range) goal is to reinstate the “fairness doctrine.”

One can made some valid points about the wisdom of freedom of speech when it relate to violent broadcasting. However the intent of these maneuvers is to control the political speech, which is direct violation to the writing and the intention of the first amendment. I’m not a big fun of Fox news, or talk show radio, but in a free society the government shouldn’t restrict one’s ability to express his views. If Democrats believe that the media is unfair, an argument usually used by conservatives, they should be free to establish their own broadcasting channels.

I know that their will be always some wise person who will go back to the argument that broadcasting involve using the public airwaves which are in scarcity and therefore should be controlled. But we already know that this is completely false, aren’t we?
