    You know… as sad as this is… this is a good example for those struggling to differentiate between the process of democratization (which is one thing) and fully functioning democracies (which is a whole different ball game). Not that democracies don’t have their breach of rights, but… they are still considerably different from militant non-democratic regimes…

    One of the arguments supporting the Oslo accord was that Arafat doesn’t have the constraints that Israel has (something like no supreme court and no human rights organizations). The fallacy of this argument should be clear now.
    The measures that the west embrace while Egypt was fighting the fundamentalist movement does not make the distinctions and is used against People like Kareem. It was wrong than, as it is wrong now.

I wrote in the past about Kareem, an Egyptian blogger who dared to advocate for human rights and to criticize the Egyptian president - and therefore was sentenced to jail.

The international efforts, appealing Egypt to release Kareem, didn’t stop and on April 27 Planning several rallies around the world. The USA rally will be in Washington DC.  If you, like me, cannot attend one of the rallies, but still want to help, here are things that you can do.
