Five years after
Five years ago George W. Bush had a chance to become one of the greatest American presidents. The credit he got after his 2002 state of the Union Address was unprecedented, considering his controversial election just a year before. Sadly, five years after, we can conclude that the expectation for greatness vanished and the credit given to the President, and his administration, was wasted.
Five years after and the 2007 State of the Union Address is far from the promised greatness. The President, in a desperate attempt to save the image of his presidency, is determine to outdo the liberals social engineering and to promote more government’s , failed, programs like No child left behind, social Security and many more.
However the big promise five years ago was not because of the social and fiscal policies of this President, it was because of the declared war on terror. The address, which several commentators labeled as Churchillian, was a declaration of war to preserve freedom and liberty. And today, five years after, no amount of words can cover the clausal disaster this administration brought on us.
I was looking behind the verbosity of the address and couldn’t find any real success that we can point to in five years of war. Obviously the President takes credit for the fact that since the 9/11 attack we had no additional attacks on American soil, but this is at best a tactical achievement. If the strategy was to change the Middle-East from a hopeless region, a place that offer nothing but desperate outlook, as the main approach to fight terror - we failed miserably.
Worse than just failing in our Middle-East strategy, The President’s policy pose a threat to Liberty greater than any terror attack. The Patriot Act, The Military Commission Act and many other attempts during the last five years shattered undermining the basic concept of Liberty and Human Rights here at home.
