Are the French Waking Up?

Comments

I’m engaged in what seems to be endless debate with Mosif, a fine man and adversary from Israel, about minimum wages (in Hebrew). While Mosif argued that keeping that not having state controlled minimum wage doesn’t increase the freedom but keep the power in the hands of the rich and privileged I argued that although it sound sexy and full of good intentions instituting minimum wages is a burden that many companies cannot afford in a competitive market and its by definition leading to increased rate of unemployment among these that are most vulnerable.

And then today I saw a report in the wall street Journal about riots in France against jobs plan:

The plan, known as the "new jobs contract," is meant to increase employment among less privileged youths by making the labor market more flexible. However, it does away with classic protections. Students fear the jobs law will leave youths more vulnerable than before, and eat away at long-standing measures that protect employees as France primes itself to better compete in a globalized world.

Or in simple terms – the French Government finally realized that it can’t operate and keep the same quality of life with the existing level of unemployment. Therefore in order to help the market creates more jobs and start to produce the French government realized that they have to remove some of protectionist regulations. While it is probably not enough, and hundreds of regulations will still remain as obstacle for any person who really want to create something of value, this is a step in the right direction.

It is kind of some the argument Mosif, don’t you think?
