This is just too much
I run across a post today by a nice lady describing, enthusiastically to say the least, her experience from Flock. I do not mind that the writer making factual mistakes about the new capabilities of Flock and about what was available or not before Flock. What’s really made me jump is the following paragraph:
Flock’s capabilities offer a new way of looking at privacy — it may cease to be a desirable attribute altogether, let alone a right. We are entering an era of globalization, collaboration, networking and sharing.
One might asked what exactly is wrong in what she said. Aren’t we giving up are privacy already by using Google and Yahoo? A quick review of Google Analytics demonstrates how much information about us is out there. Moreover, the main idea of Web 2.0 is after all collaboration, social networking and open source code. The problem with the above description is that with all these activities we do not give up on our right for privacy. We are allowing some data to be exposed so we can, presumably, get better services.
I do have the feeling that the writer wouldn’t think to give up on her right to make decision regarding her own body, such as abortion. But although being ignorant while righting about Flock is generally harmless being ignorant while giving up yours right is dangerous. The fact that might surprise this writer is that her right to make decision regarding her body is, by ruling of the Supreme Court, because of her right for privacy.
It is crucial to remember that technology is only good when it serve our needs, make our life somewhat better. Any development that intends to take a way, or limits, my rights is unwanted.
I wish to thanks the somewhat vicious writers of Go Flock Yourself for the link and review of the described post.
