Globalization and music diversity

Comments

I stumbled on this very interesting lecture about the effect of Globalization on culture diversity. In this lecture Tyler Cowen examine the effects of Globalization on music and take a very interesting look at the claim that Globalization is “flatting” culture in the lowest common denominator. Take yourself an hour and listen - if nothing else, the music is really good.

Expensive pandering

The american cars industry problem didn’t start from the rising oil price, they started because the auto makers are less competitive than their rivals - mostly the corporations based in Japan. In order to sell more cars, and increase their profit, the auto makers need to become more competitive by selling better cars for less money. This is obviously easier said than done, but it happened in the past and if the car manufactures can’t do it again they should disappear. One sure way for not helping is by handing them money they didn’t earn:

Presumed Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama told the UAW in a letter that he supports the $4B in federal aid, stating that he would “provide real solutions necessary to help this industry compete and win in the global economy.”

I don’t really think that Obama, or any other candidate, misunderstanding this basic economic. But what we see here isn’t economic rather than a bribe, and the question of the long term effect is only measured as far as November 2008.

Sacrifice for thee - but not for me!

Who ever said that only Michael Moore can make a point by being provocative, shallow and not 100% loyal to the truth? here is a clip, which I really like, that show the preferred transportation method of some of those who came to show support to Al Gore in his big Global Warming in Washington DC.

Don’t you love the example the Gore family set? But we already knew that

We set you free so you must obey us!

Comments

So when neoconservatives talk about spreading Freedom and Democracy this is what they have in mind:

We should tell Maliki, loudly and in public, that he owes his job to us, and that further prosecution of our military operations in his country will be conducted with regard only to U.S. interests, as determined in consensus by our established domestic political processes. And if he doesn’t like that, he can go to hell.

I probably got confused a little bit since this is sound very much like colonialism. But I guess this what it was all along….

He never heard about us

Comments

I took the car to the repair shop and while the guy was fixing the car we engaged in a conversation. His two sons served as marines in Iraq, and are now back at home. He told me that he is against the war, he didn’t understand why his sons had to risk their live over there and what American interest did it serve. He said something that I found very remarkable about Iran - USSR, he said, had thousands of missiles and we knew how to live with it and didn’t thought that we must destroy them - why can’t we live with few missiles that Iran might develop?

The repair shop was covered with posters of Reagan, Oliver North and some guys that I didn’t recognize. I was voting for the Republican candidate for years, he said, but I don’t know what will I do in november. Than he opened the car’s trunk and saw old campaign signs calling to elect Ron Paul. Who is this guy, he asked me, I never heard about him…

The more than million votes that Ron Paul received in the last primaries are only a drop in the sea. We must learn how to get to the masses, to people like the guy in the repair shop that could easily turned into voters. The fact that they never even heard the name Ron Paul is something that should not happened again.

Setting example

Comments

When Obama calls on Americans to save on energy use and to limit their fuel consumption he obviously demonstrates proper leadership by providing personal example of the kind of sacrifices he asks from others. This is why he is going to use, during the next months of presidential campaign a smaller airplane.

One shouldn’t be surprise knowing Obama’s choice of school for his daughters compared to the lack of choice he would like me to have for my daughters.

Ronie going to the museum

Comments

Ronie visited today, for the first time, the Children Museum of Manhattan, and she really loved it. The four floors are full of fun activities and we had to explore most of these activities before she was willing to go home. It was interesting to see her interactions with other children and how ready she is to go to a day care.

Thinking

As always, the rest of the batch is here.
